Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Responds to Trump's Threat to Relocate World Cup Matches from Boston

The mayor of Boston, Mayor Wu, suggested that the municipality was ready for a confrontation with US President Donald Trump concerning his claim that he could instruct FIFA to relocate World Cup games from the stadium in Foxborough, located approximately 35 kilometers south-west of Boston.

Wu appeared on a Boston-based podcast this week to address comments from the Trump administration, which had described her as "radical left." President Trump had warned that he would call FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "improve its situation."

A great deal of it is secured by agreement so that no one, even the president, can reverse it.

Wu added, "We live in a time where for attention, for control, to test limits ... repeated warnings ... are issued at individuals and communities who refuse to back down and comply or be obedient to a hateful agenda."

She also remarked, "We will keep being who we are, and that means, sadly, we are going to be part of a discussion that is targeting Boston's values." She finished by emphasizing her support for the city, declaring, "Ten toes down for our city."

The President's Statements and FIFA Involvement

Recently, Infantino was seen alongside President Trump at the Gaza summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. The FIFA president has also visited the Oval Office and given World Cup tournament and club championship awards to the president as gifts.

Earlier, Trump was questioned on recent disturbances in a Boston neighborhood that included a police vehicle being burned. Trump replied, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Infantino – the head of FIFA, who's phenomenal."

Trump continued, "I'd tell him: 'Let's move into another location' and they would do that. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it very easily." Trump also specifically targeted Wu, stating, "Boston's mayor is ineffective ... she's far-left, and they're taking over parts of Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Previous Threats and 2026 World Cup Details

President Trump has made previous comments that he would take the similar discussion with Infantino about moving games from other host cities, which are among the 16 locations across North America.

The US is co-hosting the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be held from June 11 to July 19 next summer.
