The UK Foreign Office has added an additional eleven more destinations to its public advisory register about the threats of industrial alcohol poisoning from adulterated beverages.

The revised travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of reported cases" of methanol poisoning.

Only recently, the government had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, following multiple high-profile events including the deadly loss of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being advised that as little as tiny quantities of methanol can result in blindness or death within twelve to forty-eight hours.

Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Utilized?

Industrial alcohol is a toxic chemical typically used in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. It is not meant for ingestion.

While it is naturally produced during the production of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the purification method.

But in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to reduce expenses, and because it is tasteless and smell-free, it is very difficult to detect.

Authorities' Advice for Travellers

Government minister the minister emphasized that every traveler should be aware of the signs of toxic alcohol contamination.

"If you're having drinks abroad, stick to reputable establishments and steer clear of local brews or complimentary drinks," Falconer warned.
