Early Saturday, reports emerged of major blasts shaking Tehran, amid claims from Israel that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Context: Escalating Strains and Prior Events
The incident occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Key events leading up to this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of more talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They dismissed assertions about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
These developments is fluid, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
