He has stated his clean record regarding the indictments

Former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's legal representative filed the answer acting as his counsel in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

His attorney announced he would seek to have the proceedings thrown out for various reasons including that his client, a critic of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

The former director was indicted shortly after Donald Trump pushed his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.

Court Developments

In court on mid-week, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald informed the judge they intended to file several legal requests to throw out the legal matter before a trial, stating the government's case was retaliatory and that a US attorney was wrongfully assigned to assume control of the case.

Mr Comey's proceedings was first handled by the original attorney, who resigned under influence from Trump after his probe into an additional opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to bring criminal charges.

Courtroom Atmosphere

James Comey came across in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the legal venue on mid-week, speaking with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was joined by his spouse, his wife and child his daughter, a US lawyer who the former government recently fired.

Upon hearing to the magistrate read his constitutional guarantees and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on mid-week, James Comey was questioned if he understood the charges.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he told the judge.

Historical Information

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was fired about a few months into Donald Trump's first term as national leader. At the time, he was overseeing an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Moscow and the presidential campaign.

Throughout his leadership, the director caused a counter-response from the Democratic party when he declared just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was probing presidential nominee the candidate's use of a non-governmental email account. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were not filed, leading to disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Prosecutors assert the former director gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he deceived the upper house by saying he had not authorized an individual at the agency to disclose to journalistic entities information about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also allege Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, block and delay" the panel by giving misleading testimony to it.

Public Statements

In a video the former director shared to his social media after he was charged, he stated he was wrongly accused and alleged Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".

"Our household have known for considerable time that there are ramifications to opposing Donald Trump," he stated. "We refuse to live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

The charges against James Comey surfaced after Donald Trump shared on digital channels calling for his attorney general, Pam Bondi, take legal action against the former director and other people.
