The Developer's Challenged Action Game Marathon Shows Signs of Life
The upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, the studio's highly-anticipated project, has made a reappearance with the news of a exclusive testing phase set to begin in October.
A Challenging Path to Launch
First announced during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, the game has experienced a tumultuous development cycle. In October 2024, the developer stated plans were to start Alpha tests sometime in 2025. This was followed by quiet months, until the game was re-revealed in April with a Sept. 23 launch date. However, following initial testing led to mixed reactions, Bungie revealed during summer that it was postponing the game's launch.
Steering Clear of Controversy
Though the title has already seen its portion of controversies, Bungie appears committed to make certain their project avoids Concord's fate. Now, it appears the game's development is finally getting back on track, as Bungie just revealed that it has conducted multiple private tests to collect player input on Marathon" since June of this year. The developer is opening the doors a bit wider, enabling additional participants to get an early look of the experience via an upcoming "closed technical test."
Exclusive Testing Information
Considering it's a closed testing phase, it's naturally more exclusive than, for example, an open beta. To participate in the technical test — which takes place between October 22nd to October 28th — players must satisfy the following requirements:
- Apply via their platform
- Live in Europe or North America
- Own a PS5, Xbox console, or Windows PC (system requirements include an Intel Core i5-6600 processor, supported graphics card, and 8GB RAM)
- Participate in their community platform
- Sign an NDA via the online community
Application Process
Applications are open now, and to be considered for the technical test, applicants must submit their application by the October 16th deadline. PC users can also register via Steam starting on October 13th, with digital platform registrations due by Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. PDT. Bungie will contact selected participants and inform them of the next steps.
"This is an important checkpoint for us as we evaluate enhancements since Marathon's Alpha, including multiple locations, several character options, prox chat, adjusted gameplay rhythm, individual matchmaking, enhanced narrative elements, and additional features," the studio said. "However, the current version is a development build and will only include a portion of what's intended for the game's full release, concentrating on the early player experience."
Further Details
Additional details about the private trial and the game itself can be found on Marathon's help page. But for players who don't qualify for the trial (or don't have time), there's still good news: The developer says a public update on the project's status is the following item on the agenda once the trial concludes.
"There will be a comprehensive report on Marathon's development in the near future after the Closed Technical Test!" The studio announced.
